Written and directed by Country Gate Artistic Director, Bill Scurato, Jersey Diner II, is a follow-up to his 2005 Jersey Diner. Scurato describes the show as a “fun, theatrical journey, exploring various people and places along New Jersey’s cultural landscape.” Scurato titles the show based on the notoriety found in so many Garden State eateries. “It’s kind of a metaphor,”he says, “relating the unique character of New Jersey diners to some of the state’s distinctive personalities and folk legends.”
In the play, three diner sidekicks recall with both humor and pathos, historical happenings and and pop-culture phenomena forever connected with the Garden State. Jersey Diner II explores the personalities associated with these events, and considers their impact on the human condition. This year’s edition explores the gothic and urban legends associated with Shades of Death Road, a two-lane rural thoroughfare of about 7 miles in length, in central Warren County. The aptly named byway has reputedly been the scene of inordinate numbers of murders and other unnatural deaths. Jersey Diner II takes a spooky and darkly humorous look at the legendary avenue.
In addition, Jersey Diner II pays homage to New Jersey natives Bud Abbot and Lou Costello, with a rendition of their classic “Who’s On First” comedy routine.
Finally, the play commends the “everyman” identity associated with New Jersey musician, Bruce Springsteen.
Because each actor is required to portray multiple characters, Scurato felt it was essential to choose versatile performers in assembling the Jersey Diner II cast. The ensemble is comprised of: Vinny Foti, of Stewartsville; JoAnn Mazza, of Stroudsburg and Scurato, himself, who resides in Harmony Township.
